Mark 4:39 "Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm."
Even the word “calm” seems to have a calming effect when spoken. When someone tells you to “calm down” they are usually trying to get your attention to settle down and think about what is happening. We could all use more calm in our lives the majority of days.
The Greek word in this verse in Mark is also the word for tranquility or silence. Sit for just a few seconds and think about those two words. Be silent for just a few seconds. Now think about the men on the boat with Jesus as the storm was just about to capsize sending them into the dark depths of the foaming, raging sea. You can only imagine the turmoil and the fear. Then silence. Then calm. It’s quiet. No sounds. The writer says “there was a great calm” in an instant. Just thinking of this scene gives us a sense of peace. It went from a raging storm to a sea of glass in an instant. Great calm.
Jesus knows when there seems to be nothing but storms raging in our lives. He knows how to calm those storms. He knows exactly what is going on and He knows how to silence the fears. It is up to us to calm down and look into His face and not be intimidated on how big the waves of life seem to be. When Jesus is speaking into our lives His calmness and love will guide us on the journey of the days ahead. Take time to let His calm ways give you the peace that surpasses human understanding.
Proverbs 17:27 "A man of knowledge restrains his words, and a man of understanding maintains a calm spirit."
Psalms 46:10 "Be still (calm, silent) and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
