HUMILITY: Strength Under Control

Philippians 2:3 "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,"

Humility is hard to practice in a world that promotes self-gratification. Everyone wants to look perfect but acting perfect is another story. All you have to do is open your phone to social media and see photo after photo of the face of someone who wants you to look and see how perfect they are and how perfect their life is. We do not live in a world filled with humility. Selfish ambition and vain conceit are all over today’s world in selfish faces plastered all over the internet, TV and real life.

So how do we practice humility? We look for others who need some help. We do our best to be there for those who are going through the trials and tribulations. We encourage others to persevere. Jesus helped the poor and the sick. He healed those that the church did not pay any attention to. He scolded the church leaders for their lack of humility and their lack of compassion. They hated him for his humility to the point of death.

Every day God gives us is a day we can practice humility. We can learn to listen to others who need to unburden their hearts. We can stand alongside the one who is suffering from something medical or something emotional. We can be a friend and a confidant. The scripture verse puts it simply to value others above ourselves. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper in a showing of true humility. He was the Master, Rabbi, Leader, Teacher yet he bowed before them and scrubbed their dirty feet. Only a lowly servant did that kind of thing. Not a leader, or so they thought.

John 13:14 "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet."

As the time and years went on after his crucifixion and resurrection, they understood what he was teaching. Humility. Pure, simple, true humility is the only way to be a true follower of Jesus Christ. He came to die for us, the sinners of the world. Let us each learn to live in this world with humility in our hearts and our actions and be like our Lord and savior Jesus.

Proverbs 15:33 "Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor."
