CONTENT: The Secret of Peace

Philippians 4:11 "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances."

Learning to be content is something we should all strive for in our lives. But the thing is, there is so much in the world today which leads us to believe we need more and more to keep us happy and content. Society leads us to believe if we do not have the best and newest we should not be content. Just look at all of the ads trying to sell us things.

God tells us otherwise. He tells us that material things and riches will not satisfy our souls. Jesus told the rich young man to sell everything and follow Him. We are to give to the poor and the needy. Being content is something we learn in life it is not something that comes naturally for mankind. Have you seen the toddlers playing with toys? One always wants what the other one has and then tries to take it.

When we are content, many of the days in our lives are peaceful and full. We have learned that having enough is enough. We have learned that the goodness of God shows so much more when we live a life of contentment without all the pressure of more material possessions. We smile more. We laugh more. We love more. We give more of ourselves to others. We do things to make others content. God smiles upon us.

King Solomon was famous for all of his riches and possessions, yet even he said in Ecclesiastes 6:9; “It is better to be content with what the eyes can see than for one’s heart always to crave more. This continual longing is futile – like chasing the wind.” In the end he did not please God and his life was a mess both spiritually and materially. More is not the answer to happiness.

Jesus was born into a lowly family who had enough but were not wealthy. When he began preaching and teaching, He did not go to those who were rich and powerful, He went to the poor, the sick and the needy. He taught that those who had nothing could come, have faith, believe in Him as Savior and be granted eternal life with Him.

Come follow Jesus and be content with today.
