Nahum 1:7 "The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him."
We all know that life can be so very hard at times and sometimes it is almost more than we are able to bear. We cry out to God for help but nothing seems to change. What can we do but cry and do our best to trust that he is in control of each situation and that his love will guide us and cover us? All we are able to do is crawl into his arms for refuge from the storms. We cry as the storms rage around us, and we do our best to trust him.
Many times, it is not us going through the troubles and the storms. It is our children, our best friend, our parents, our co-worker, our spouse, others who are close to us. We offer our arms of encouragement and refuge for them. We console them and calm them. We say our prayers to the Lord for them and trust that he will make a way through the storm, through the dark valley. We know there is no other way but through it but we must have him by our side as we walk the walk.
Psalm 57:1 "Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed."
Back in the old days the Pioneers would build a fort out in the plains to protect them from vicious animals and warring tribes of Indians. A fort is a refuge. Back in the Medieval days the kings would build a castle fortress to protect themselves and their people from their enemies. The fortress walls would protect them. The fortress was a refuge.
In this same way, as we call out to God in the times of war in our lives and trouble in our souls. He comes in to build those walls of protection around us and becomes our refuge. We can trust that his refuge is strong and might and will be enough to withstand the enemy and keep us from harm. He is our refuge!
Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;"
