GROW: Spiritual Hunger That Leads to Life

1 Peter 2:2-3 "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good."

I imagine that each one of us has said “Grow up!” or heard someone tell another to “Grow up!” at one time or another in our life. We learn to grow up emotionally and intellectually if we are indeed growing. In this verse Peter is telling us we should crave to spiritually grow up and learn the wisdom and knowledge of Jesus Christ and of the Father. This is done by the power of the Holy Spirit in us who reveals all when we search, seek and find answers to life and how to get through it. Holy Spirit keeps us wanting to grow in good solid ground.

We all know that an infant will not grow unless they are fed and we all know that the type of food changes as the baby grows. So, it is with us and our walk with the Lord. We begin with the confession that Jesus is our only hope for salvation. We surrender our lives to Him. We seek out those who can help us grow in our understanding of scripture. We study the Bible. We listen to others who are farther ahead in their walk with Him and hear their testimony of truth. If we stay on baby formula, we will never be able to grow from a baby to a child, to an adolescent, to a mature adult. The parable of the seed by Jesus in Luke 8 is all about growing or not growing.

Sometime growing is uncomfortable and awkward but always necessary as a human and as a child of God. How can we ever hope to teach and lead others if we can barely crawl through the day? In the weeks ahead let us focus on the meat of God’s word and ask Him for the ability to devour it and grow more in our wisdom so that we can go into the world brave and ready for what is ahead!

1 Corinthians 3:7 "So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow."
