HUMBLE: Finding Rest for Your Soul

Matthew 11:29-30 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

When Jesus the Messiah finally showed up on earth the Jewish nation was in shambles. They had waited centuries for their Warrior Messiah to come and defeat their enemies, but Jesus was a humble man who spoke with love for others and forgiveness of our enemies. The religious, pious Jews rejected him and eventually had him put to death because he was not who they wanted him to be. He was humble and peaceful. They were hostile and filled with hate, pride and greed.

Jesus teaches us that a humble heart and gentle spirit is what following him is about. To take his yoke means to come along side of him and be like him. To think like him. To act like him. To be a reflection of him. Jesus knew the selfishness inside of the heart and minds of mankind and taught the total opposite of selfishness and arrogance. He taught humility and that caring for others is far more important than oneself.

Today we live in a world that glorifies selfishness and those who are humble seem to get crushed by those who live for themselves first. Our world has little room for humble and gentle people. Sad to say this world is ruled by sin and hate. But we are not of this world. We have been called into the kingdom of God. We are redeemed and saved for the new earth where pride, arrogance, and selfishness will be gone, and all of the people will be gentle and humble.

Psalms 149:4 "For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory."

The world is like a roller coaster ride gone out of control. Following after Jesus is like a gentle canoe ride down a calm and beautiful river. You get to choose your ride. Let his humble gentle love bless your heart.
