PREACH: The Good News

Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

When we think of the word preach, most of us think of the man at the front, in the church pulpit or at the podium, speaking about the gospel of Jesus and what he does for those who come to him. They preach about the Good News. They help us understand the Bible and how to follow the ways of Jesus. That man is called a Preacher.

The word in Greek is kerusso (kay-roos-so) and by definition is one who heralds or proclaims the truth, especially divine truth. A public crier would be a preacher as they proclaim something. A person who would publish the truth is also preaching. Every time we speak out publicly about a topic that we are passionate about we become a preacher. Jesus tells the disciples in this verse to go out into the world and proclaim the gospel. To preach the gospel. To speak out publicly about the gospel. The gospel of Jesus Christ is to repent from sin and believe in him as the risen Son of God who offers eternal life instead of death. When we speak with other about the gospel, the message, the good news of what Jesus offers to those who come to him in faith and love we are preaching. Jesus wants us all to preach to our family. Preach to our friends. Preach to the grocery store clerk. Preach to those we love and care about. We use plain simple words for those who have never heard the message of love that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life to all who live in a dark, unforgiving world.

Jesus doesn’t need us all to stand before a church congregation and preach. He needs us to talk to those who are in our every day life. He needs us to come along side those who are hurting and crying and offer a shoulder to lean on. He needs us to speak his message of love and acceptance. He needs us to tell others they can be saved to a new life when this life is complete.

Matthew 4:17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

In whatever way we proclaim, declare, publish or preach the name of Jesus and his divine message of truth, we become preachers for him. Just speak his name and tell of his wonderful deeds. If you have a mouth and can talk, preach! Preach the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ, Son of God.
