SWEET: Rest with God Peacefully

Proverbs 3:24 "When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet."

Many of us hear the word “sweet” and we think of chocolate cake with whipped cream cheese frosting or some other scrumptious dessert. Not the case for the word in Proverbs which has the meaning of pleasant, peaceful, fulfilling, soundly. We all love those sweet peaceful nights of sleep when we wake up refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Those mornings we wake up after a fitful night with aches and pains in our bodies it is exactly the opposite of sweet.

The writer of this Proverb reminds us to not be afraid of what the night may bring and the only way we can lie down and have that sweet peace without fear is by keeping our thoughts and our prayers on the Lord. When we seek the Lord, He will give us the peace that surpasses all understanding. We find the sweetness that He offers to His children when we meditate on Him day and night. The longer we walk with Him the more His wisdom fills our hearts and minds and He guides us throughout the trials of the day.

In Isaiah 5:20 it says; “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

We are reminded that without the Lord God in our lives everything can become completely turned around. Mankind has had a very hard time choosing right from wrong since the very beginning in the Garden when both Adam and Eve chose self over God. The selfish person choses bitter over sweet. Jesus reminded His followers to choose light and said He was the Light of the World. Our Savior Jesus chose good, He chose light, and He chose sweet.

Each day when we rise to the meet the day, we can thank the Lord for His sweet touch upon us. When we choose Him and walk with Him, we have nothing to fear.

Psalms 119:103 "How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth."
