UNDERSTANDING: More than just Knowing

Proverbs 4:7 "Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore, get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding."

A great way to look at wisdom and understanding is this; “wisdom is the ability to use that understanding to make good choices and take the right action in life.” When we understand that every day is a gift from the Lord, we gain the wisdom to do things as we have been taught by the Bible and from others who also follow the wisdom of the Bible.

Throughout life we begin to understand that our choices always make a difference. Understanding that not all people are going to do make good choices help us know that we will need to use kindness and patience while others learn wisdom not to continue to make bad choices. There will still be times that we will not fully understand why something happened but we can still know that God is in control no matter how it may look on the outside. Understanding is how we trust God that he loves us unconditionally and wisdom is knowing this without any doubts.

As children we begin to grow and learn that not all in life is fair. We do not understand fairness and we do not agree with it. Why shouldn’t everything be fair? We have temper tantrums about the fairness of life but that does not normally change the situation. When a parent sits us down and explains that riding your bike out on the road because of the heavy traffic is not a good idea we begin to understand why they said “No”. We gain a little bit of wisdom by understanding certain ideas and choices are sometimes hazardous to our health.

When the decades pass and we look back on our lives we should be able to see that hand of God moving and teaching us how to understand and how to gain wisdom. Once we learn understanding we impart wisdom to others that we love and care about. It’s really not rocket science. It is having the faith to understand that Jesus Christ is the only one who gives us a life worth living. Without him we are dust in the wind. Understand and be wise.

Philippians 4:7 "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
