VICTORIOUS: When Victory Looks Different

Jul 15
2 min read

Zechariah 9:9 "Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

Generally, when we hear the words victorious or victory, we associate it with winning. The winner is the one who is victorious. But here in this verse it tells us about a king riding into the limelight on a baby donkey. Most kings or grand prize winner rides in on a huge white stallion or a Rolls Royce or some kind of magnificent, grand, vehicle. This verse was pointing to Jesus, the coming king of the Jews. The Messiah. The Christ. The Savior. Riding in on a little, baby donkey? How is this a sign of being victorious over the enemy?

Here we learn that our Lord and Savior is not a showoff. He is not a savior who needs any kind of worldly adoration. He is a victorious savior who wants a true and loving heart to come follow him with joy and expectation. We have a God who wants us each to be victorious in a way that is very different from what the world calls victorious. He wants to save us from this world and not be a part of this world because this world is not filled with goodness. It is filled with darkness and evil, with hatred and envy. He asks each of us to choose him over the things of this world and be victorious.

Psalm 45:4 "In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth, humility and justice; let your right hand achieve awesome deeds."

Jesus told us that in this world we would have trials and tribulations but if we held on to our faith and belief in the Father, we would be victorious and win the prize of eternal life with him. We would inherit a New Earth and a perfect life for all of eternity. We would live victoriously in the originally planned paradise, in communion and relationship with our Creator forever with no tears, no pain, no sorrows, only goodness, joy, happiness and love.

Over and over and over in the last book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation, the writer speaks of the final victory. Those who choose to follow King Jesus are victorious. We have chosen the winning team and we then encourage others to do the same. Share the victory of Jesus with everyone.

Revelation 21:7 "Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children."
