WISDOM: More Than Knowledge


James 3:17 "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy."

 

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines wisdom as this: Wisdom is the ability to use your accumulated knowledge and life experience to make sound judgments, solve problems, and act with good sense. It involves a deep understanding of people, situations, and the long-term consequences of actions, ultimately guiding choices that benefit both yourself and others.

 

The writers of the Bible used the word wisdom or wise almost 500 times in their writings. This says wisdom is a very important topic to the Lord! This verse in James, Chapter 3, he is speaking of two very different types of wisdom. He first speaks about worldly wisdom and then Godly wisdom. Godly wisdom comes from the power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives on a day-to-day basis. We all know that worldly wisdom can be so very different from the wisdom of God. Sadly, some of the most intelligent people in the world have lacked any kind of Godly wisdom. In fact, James writes that worldly wisdom is demonic. It is a very good chapter to read about the kind of wisdom the followers of Jesus need to use in the world today.

 

Proverbs 2:6 "For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."

 

We have a Lord God who encourages His people to use the wisdom He provides for us. When we walk with Him year after year that wisdom should be heard in our words and seen in the things we do. Back in the 1990’s we had a saying, “WWJD” meaning, “What Would Jesus Do?”. When we stopped to reflect on the saying we knew Jesus was asking people to use wisdom in all areas of life, to use Jesus wisdom and not earthly wisdom.

 

Wisdom and intelligence are not the same thing. Wisdom is knowing the right thing to do while intelligence is merely knowledge. When we figure out the difference our lives can be so much better and our responses to the daily issues can be the way God would want us to handle it in wise ways.

 

Many times, in scripture wisdom is referred to as “she”. Sisters, let us be the “she” wisdom in the world today.
