Wisdom - Wednesday Weekly Word

ree

Proverbs 14:17 "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy."

For the longest time I have said to my family and friends, “My heart’s desire is to be a wise, old woman one day.” I have hit the old part and am still working on the wise part. Wisdom is something we gain from experience. In our younger years we think we know what is best and then we find out that we do not.

In the New Testament, James, the brother of Jesus, quoted this same Proverb. The New Living Translation said it this way;

James 3:17 'But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.’

Being wise and having wisdom always makes our lives easier as we are able to choose better words, think better thoughts, and be better human beings. There are multiple Proverbs and Psalms about wisdom and those who are wise. Wisdom has less to do with intellect and more to do with heart. Wisdom is gained and learned and is insight and prudence. Many times, in Proverbs wisdom and foolishness are two words used together. One you want to have and the other you do not want to have. As we continue to live life with others, we should always be learning how to use and provide Godly wisdom for others and how to encourage others to gain more wisdom. Our knowledge of God can be shared in wise counsel and be a benefit to others.

Proverbs 2:10 - 11 "When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you,"

Sometimes the smartest people around us have no true or pure wisdom. They may have intellect, but they lack in the kind of wisdom the Lord encourages us to have. As we grow closer to the Lord, He places that pure wisdom into our minds and others can hear it in our words and see it our deeds.

James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

All we have to do is ask the Lord for more wisdom and He will give it.
